Do you wonder what Sensory Deprivation Tank is? In one sentence, it’s a lightless, soundproof tank in which you float for a certain amount of time. It’s not so well known, despite of its almost revolutionary technique of relaxing your mind and body with supposedly amazing effects.
It all began with Lilly Physician. Philosopher. Inventor. Writer. Neuroscientist. Psychoanalyst. Psychonaut. Meet John Cunningham Lilly, the inventor of the Sensory Isolation Tank. He was a pioneer in many areas that are related to the nature of consciousness, psychedelic drugs and even dolphin communication. His career is marked by revolutionary accomplishments, such as the theory of internal realities, hardware/software model of the human brain, mapping pleasure and pain pathways in the brain and much more. He also attempted interspecies communication with large brained dolphins. It was in 1954 when John asked himself: “What would happen, if a person was stripped of all their external stimuli?” And out of this question the Sensory Deprivation Tank was born. But what exactly is Sensory Deprivation Tank? Well, as the name itself suggests, it’s a chamber that isolates you from any external influences, and more. It’s a tank filled with salt water (Epson salt). The concentration of the salt is high, which makes water denser. The result is a floating sensation without the use of muscles. The water and air temperature in the tank is similar to that of the human body temperature. You are submerged into the tank with only your head sticking out of the water, or in some cases you lie on the dense water. As mentioned before, the tank is lightless and soundless. Effects of Sensory Deprivation Tank What happens with your mind while floating in the Sensory Deprivation Tank? Well, a great many things. Alienation from this world and your body is common, losing the sense of time and place, and vivid hallucinations. Long term effects are mostly total relaxation, a feeling of rest, a change of perception of the world and a better understanding of the environment. There are also suggestions of enhanced creativity, better coordination and abolishment of depression. One study suggests the tank can be used to treat dieses such as high blood pressure, chronic pain and movement disorder. Lilly went even further. He claimed that while being in Sensory Deprivation Tank, he could and did contact the beings of other dimensions. We can’t take these claims very seriously, as Lilly also experimented with LSD, but it’s still a fun and interesting read. It’s all well documented on his website: www.johnclilly.com. Although Sensory Deprivation Tank was invented in the mid 50’s, it is only now starting to receive greater attention and becoming more of a mainstream thing. You can buy the tank at Samadhitank and ZenFloatCo. Prices are a bit high, as expected, but reasonable at the same time, especially if you understand what you are purchasing. The samadhitank.com also has awesome FAQ section on their page where you can get all the answers about “floating” and Sensory Deprivation Tanks. As Sensory Deprivation Tanks are becoming more mainstream, there are also more centers popping up every day where you can try them out. Check the web if there is one near you and give it a shot. It will probably be money well spent.
